Not knowing where to start makes it difficult. I’m going to do my best to make it easy on myself. I read the Bible. Well, I listen to and read the Bible. I’ve read the Bible in a full revolution each year since 2001. It has absolutely changed my life… for the better.
You expected me to say that though didn’t you? Well, that’s because I’m not alone. Many other people decide to read the Bible in a year. Some make it. Most don’t. The truth is that people get lost. They want to know what’s in it, but they get lost in how it is written.
We want it to fit into our world. The words, the time it takes, the everything. Kinda funny on this side of reading it though. We people want God to fit into our lives too. That’s sounds good at first. “Make time for reading the Word.” and “I hope we can fit Church in this week.” The reason it’s funny or ironic is because after going through the Bible in its entirety I’ve come to realize it’s my story. It’s your story too. It’s the story of God’s people learning to understand God and going through daily interaction with Him.
That is why it has been so important to me. Not because I was able to fit it in and learn some good principles to live by, but because it has taught me to understand God’s perspective and love for me. I fully believe that had I not had the daily interaction with the God’s Word that I would not be as free as I am today. I would not be as good of a husband or father. I certainly wouldn’t have the wisdom that God has granted me. Will you have all of this things after you’ve read the Bible? That I cannot say. What I can say without a doubt is whatever you are seeking in life, you will find it by talking with AND listening to your Maker.
Many of us know that we can talk to God anytime we want. Some don’t know that (if you didn’t… now you do). But what about the other part of conversation… The listening part. My dad always told me that God works in perfect ratios. That is why we have two ears and one mouth. So we can listen twice as much as we talk. However, most of us talk a lot more than we listen. We are no different when it comes to Our Father In Heaven. In fact, (and there isn’t anything wrong with this) we usually fill our time with requests when we are talking with Him. Although he wants us to come boldly to him with our requests, I personally feel it laid upon my heart to listen to Him too.
If you are reading this still you are either a begrudged family member out to pacify me, a curious friend or co-worker, or you are interested in getting through at least one full revolution of the Bible for some reason. The reason I am writing this now is because God has been pursuing me. He wants me to do SOMETHING for him. For the longest time, I had no idea what that was. It does however make a ton of sense to me now. It may sound simple to you. It sounded too simple to me at first, but I’ve come to realize what a tough commission it actually will be.
My commission is to share His Word with people that have always wanted to know what the Bible says, but can’t get through it. For those that know God is calling them to do more with their life than they are doing but have no idea what direction to go. For those that simply want to hear God speak to them.
I plan to do that sharing through a Bible Study. I’m not sure exactly what it will “look” like at this point because I’m still listening. It will involve daily interaction with God’s Word, Fellowship, and Prayer. It will not be a radical dictatorship that forces you to read the Bible everyday. If you need that hire a personal trainer and have them hit you with a Bible during your workout. In this Bible Study you will not be tarred and feathered and sent out of town on rails if you miss a day or a meeting. It is voluntary and your attendance is between you and God.
If you feel lead to join a group of people that are hungry to hear God’s word, but don’t want to do it alone then contact me and let me know.
